By 1989 we had completed several projects together and had a body of work building. I grew tired of our group being referred to as “those guys from the Midwest,” and Edward really wanted to “brand” the work. We played with a few ideas, but nothing stuck. While on the way to Marcon in May of 1989, we started playing word games with “fiber” (as in fiberglass). “Fiber” this or “fiber” that.

Then someone thought of “Hyperdyne” from Aliens. That lead to “Cyberdyne” from Terminator, and very quickly Fyberdyne became a word. Edward wanted something a little more “science fictiony,” so we added “Laboratory” which soon changed to “Laboratories” to denote several locations.

So, in the spring of 1989, “Fyberdyne Laboratories” became our name. We talked about a logo—something with a star field—and Bob went to work. During lunch he draw up the perfect logo. We copyrighted the name, put on tee-shirts, made a letterhead, leveraged the movie rights,
and so forth.

An official name has allowed us to function as a company and buy materials unavailable to the general public or buy in bulk for larger projects.  Several members of the group have also worked professionally with companies such as Paramount, LucasFilm, Marvel, DC comics, and Dynamic Forces. We’ve also done work with the premier comic artist Alex Ross. While these endeavors have been fun and productive, the bulk of our work is done for our own enjoyment.

Over the years, the name “Fyberdyne Laboratories” has become synonymous with cool stuff and fun people.
